The last Exposé show for 1997 was back to a three-band lineup with Call to Arms opening the show (they had previously opened for High Bird back in March). The four piece have definitely improved their core sound (Rush with Eddie Van Halen type leads) by rounding it out with a few strong instrumental pieces.

Lens from Marin was next up with their melodic three-piece style, both guitar driven and rambly. Guitarist Keith Roberts makes all the difference in bringing out the tight rhythmic interplay between drummer Gary Schenunstuhl and bassist Don Tyler in their hour-long workout, drawing material from their recently released disc.

Maelstrom took the stage shortly after 11:00; the band had played two previous Exposé Concert Series performances as Spiritcircle. With a strong keyboard base now replaced with a woodwind (sax and flute) player, the new versions of their older material (from their upcoming EP) accentuated the group's aggressive edge. Vocalist Torin Finney's stage presence is still the main focal point with his unique mix of Celtic presence and mysticism. Their surprise cover of the evening was the quintet's version of Gong's 'You Can't Kill Me' mixed with bits of Area's 'Arbeit Macht Frei.' In all, a fine musical closure to one year's worth of eclectic shows in the South Bay. End of text
